Sustainable Solutions: Biodegradable

TrendsIndustrial Solutions

When we use biodegradable materials, we develop products that decompose into water, CO2, or biomass and contribute to a more circular economy.

Based on our recent State of Sustainability Report, 58% of the industry is using biodegradable chemicals today, with 22% more planning to introduce them in the next three years. Whether or not these materials will be the most impactful sustainability priority, there is clearly room to move the needle and increase the proportion of companies using these materials.

By offering biodegradable materials, we have the opportunity to contribute to a more circular economy. We categorize materials as biodegradable when they are comprised of at least 20% bio-based carbon content that includes soil, water, marine classified polymers, additives, or compounds.

Recommending biodegradable materials

No greenwashing

Eighty percent of the industry has concerns about greenwashing. That's why we carefully review and hand-select the chemicals we classify as sustainable. For a product to be classified in our biodegradable category, it must first pass a screening to ensure we are promoting options that are not counter-intuitive to sustainability.

Aligning to industry standards

For chemicals to be classified as biodegradable, we require documentation with details so that our customers can measure and include it in their sustainability targets. For biodegradable products, we require that it is at least 20% bio-based carbon content to align with industry standards and the needs of our customers.

'State of Sustainability' Report: Biodegradable Edition

In 2023, IMCD Industrial Solutions conducted an extensive global survey to understand the sustainable priorities, motivations, and challenges in industrial sectors. One of the areas explored was how biodegradable materials are being used today.

Out of this, a first-of-its-kind report was developed on the 'State of Sustainability' in industrial sectors. Access your free copy of the Biodegradable Edition of the report today to uncover new industry data and insights on the use of these materials across different regions, industries, and companies.
