Waterwashed, Calcined, and Surface Treated Kaolin Clays

Water-washed kaolin is the work-horse of the industry. Its wide use as an all-purpose filler and extender make it the industry standard for driving down total formulation costs:

Calcined kaolin clay is produced when hydrous kaolin is heated to over 1000°C. The crystal structure of the calcined clay becomes amorphous. The rearrangement of the crystal structure of kaolin which comes with a loss of hydroxyl groups makes calcined clays harder, more abrasive and more porous than their water-washed counterparts:

Surface treated kaolin clays combine the base kaolin’s particle shape, chemical resistance and brightness with a surface treatment to optimize performance for various applications:

Polyfil 35: Coarse kaolin clay with an extremely low oil absorption. It works very well at high loadings in extrusion applications where acid resistance and durability are required. Water-washed kaolin clays such as Polyfil 35 offer acid resistance, reinforcement, neutral pH, and extremely low crystalline silica and salt content. They are higher in brightness and more consistent than airfloated clays.

Polyfil 70: Calcined clays, Polyfil 70, are brighter than most water-washed clays, offering excellent processing and limited reinforcement. They impart outstanding wet/dry electrical properties due to the elimination of bound water during the calcined process. Compounds with calcined clays extrude smoothly and reduce stickiness in processing. Polyfil 70 is a high brightness calcined kaolin clay used to extend elastomeric and thermoplastics products, including wire and cable applications.

Polyfil 80: Calcined clays, such as, are brighter than most water-washed clays, offering excellent processing and limited reinforcement. They impart outstanding wet/dry electrical properties due to the elimination of bound water during the calcined process. Compounds with calcined clays extrude smoothly and reduce stickiness in processing. Polyfil 80 is a moderate particle size, and higher brightness calcined kaolin clay used to extend elastomeric and thermoplastics products, including wire and cable applications.

Polyfil 90: Calcined clays, such as Polyfil 90, are brighter than water-washed clays, offering excellent processing and limited reinforcement. They impart outstanding wet/dry electrical properties due to the elimination of bound water during the calcined process. Compounds with calcined clays extrude smoothly and reduce stickiness in processing. Polyfil 90 is KaMin’s highest brightness and smallest particle size calcined kaolin clay. It is used to extend elastomeric and thermoplastics products, including wire and cable applications.

Polyfil DL: Large particle size, delaminated clay that reduces gas/vapor permeability. It is a type of water-washed clay which is processed to have a high aspect ratio. Large, platy particles provide effective barriers to gases and liquids and help improve gas retention properties in rubber inner-liners and other applications.

Polyfil HG90: Ultra-fine particle size and very high brightness water-washed kaolin clay. It offers modest reinforcement, and is used to lower the cost of non-black rubber and plastic compounds. Water-washed kaolin clays such as Polyfil HG90 offer acid resistance, reinforcement, neutral pH, and extremely low crystalline silica and salt content. Polyfil HG90 has higher brightness than other water washed kaolin clays, and its particle size is similar to titanium dioxide.

Polyfil WC: Surface treated calcined kaolin clay used in Wire and Cable and other thermoplastic applications. It is designed to reduce water vapor transmission, yields excellent wet and dry electrical properties, and also good long-term stability in EPR and cross-linked polyethylene. Calcined clays impart have low conductivity due to the elimination of bound water during the calcined process. Compounds with calcined clays extrude smoothly and reduce stickiness in processing.

Polyfil WC-426: White, high brightness, surface treated calcined kaolin clay designed to maximize compatibility with surrounding polymers and to minimize absorption of interfacial moisture. Mechanical and electrical properties of polymers such as EPR and cross-linked polyolefins are preserved even after long-term exposure to a high-humidity environment. Calcined clays impart have low conductivity due to the elimination of bound water during the calcined process. Compounds with calcined clays extrude smoothly and reduce stickiness in processing. Polyfil WC-426 is KaMin’s highest brightness and smallest particle size treated calcined clay.

Polyfil X: Water washed kaolin clays such as Polyfil X offer acid resistance, reinforcement, neutral pH, and extremely low crystalline silica and salt content. Polyfil X is a moderate brightness water washed kaolin, but yet has a higher brightness and offers improved consistency compared to air-floated clays and moderate reinforcement.

Polyfil XB: Water washed kaolin clays such as Polyfil XB offer acid resistance, reinforcement, neutral pH, and extremely low crystalline silica and salt content. Polyfil XB is a moderate brightness water washed kaolin, but yet has a higher brightness and offers improved consistency compared to air-floated clays and moderate reinforcement.
